Hello

I'm Kelly Bates and I'm a qualified proofreader. I provide professional proofreading, copyediting and plain-English editing services to businesses, publishers and individual clients. I work on a freelance basis, giving you the flexibility to get support when you need it. 

I work mainly on business documentation (such as proposals, business reports and recruitment/assessment materials) and non-fiction books, but I also have a wide range of experience in different types of documents. 

I specialise in UK English, but also work with other varieties of English, such as US English. I have experience of working with people whose first language is not English to help them make their text sound as natural as possible, whilst maintaining their own style and voice.

My experience

I trained with the Publishing Training Centre and the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading. I am an Intermediate Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading and abide by their Code of Practice, Ensuring Editorial Excellence.

 

Prior to training as a proofreader, I worked as a Human Resources Manager in the automotive industry for 17 years and held individual chartered status (MCIPD) of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development for 14 years.

I have experience of working with a wide variety of texts, including:

  • Recruitment and assessment materials, including Strength-based Interviews, Situational Strengths Tests and virtual assessment centres (including candidate and assessor guides and source materials)

  • HR documentation such as employee handbooks, employee policies and employee intranet sites

  • Employee communications

  • Business reports and white papers

  • Tender documents, proposals and project implementation paperwork

  • Non-fiction books in various genres including Leadership, Diversity & Inclusion and Childcare

  • Charity award applications

  • Blog posts
